Why does my car just stop working while driving?

I just bought a used 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee, and before I bought it I had my mechanic check it out. He said that everything looked good, but that I need to get a new catalytic converter and eventually new rear breaks before I get it inspected. Twice, while I have been driving it, it just completely stopped working and the gas pedal will lock up completely. It can take up to five minutes, but if I re-start my car enough times, it will work again. I noticed last time it happened that the check gages light lit up. But once I got my car starting again, it went out. The check engine light is also on, but my mom says that's just because of the catalytic converter. But I don't know... It's really terrifying to be driving a car that can lock up at any given moment, especially as a new driver. So what could this problem be? The mechanic checked it out completely and never mentioned any serious issues...
