Why does my betta fish do that?

I've had my betta fish for three months now and noticed a few funny things about him. When I come near him and he sees me, he stretches out his gills. Why is that?

I understand they get temperamental whenever they see another betta. Could it be that I scare him or my distorted reflection in the bowl somehow makes him think I'm another fish? But he only stretches out his gills, not his fins. My father keeps telling me he is happy to see me, but come on! LOL

It is true - he IS happy to see you and is letting you know it. Betas will take up with their owners and interact with them.

yes i had a betta for 3 years and he would do the same thing your fish does when he saw me coming with his food.
