Why does my android layout editor show a blank screen?

I am using Eclipse with the Android plugin. I have created layouts in the past and for some reason the android layout editor will only show the red box around a created item, such as a button or a TextView, and not the item itself. I've tried restarting Eclipse but nothing seems to work. What is going on?
