I took my 4x4 Runner to get it fixed cause it was leaking oil somewhere ( i thought it was the pan) but the mechanics said it was the front crank seal (what is that). I got the impression they couldn't or didnt want fix what I asked cause of all the bolts and front diffrential etc....They said they fixed the front crank seal and replaced my timing belt and they broke my radiator and i had to pay extra for that. After all supposely my Runner is fixed but now it has a burning smell somewhere from the engine once in a while. I could also smell it when i'm driving. Also it feels like i've lost some power. It dont feel as strong anymore. I noticed it when I took off with the truck the first time but I cant take it back cause its been a while now plus I don't want to deal with them again.Never going back to them. Can U help me out?
I dont think im loosing antifreeze cause it's still full. I literally smell the burn when Im driving and when I stop. Can't tell if it's oil or antifreeze.

The timing belt is probably off 1 tooth. If so it will cause the vehicle to act "lazy". And you probably had more than 1 oil leak or the crank seal was improperly installed. Easy to screw up if you do pay attention.
Well if you do not want to take it back to the original shop, go to IATN.NET and find a pro near you. Just go to the shop finder Link. Or ck with AAA for a reputable
shop near you. It sounds like you will have to have it
diagnosed. Make sure to give them all the repair history.
You can not fix a cam timing issue by adjusting Ignition timing. LOL! on that advise. Good Luck!

you should realy check out a few other things before you point fingers check your spark plugs. these should be changed every 90-100,000 miles. "don't go with the cheap ones". also check your air filter and maybe upgrade. be sure your burning all the fuel in the cylinders as this could cause fuel build up and your caar could susiquently blow up.
if you do alot of off roading and put alot of wear on your ingine i'd recomend dual oil filters to slow down sludge

There's not many engine smells you can detect while driving down the road because the road wind blows them away. One exception is the smell of hot antifreeze you'd get inside the car from a leaking heater core under your dash. The most important things are that the shop fixed the front oil seal and got the timing belt on right. It would be possible for the timing belt to be off by one tooth on the gear rings which could affect engine power. So you could have the timing checked. If you haven't been changing the fluids and filters as Toyota says and you have an older vehicle, then you'll start running into a lot of maintenance costs now, so you might want to sell the truck.

The mechanic was correct about replacing the timing belt when fixing the crank seal. You have to pull alot of stuff off to get to it.Then you don,t want to put on the old parts when you put it together. He may have not put the timing belt on properly. This means that your timing maybe a couple of notches off. This may be fixed by turning the distributor.Or putting a timing light on the truck.I am a firm believer of letting toyota mechanics only work on my rigs. This doesn,t mean take it to the dealerjust to a guy who really knows his toys.Take it in for a second opion on the smell thing.
