I have a 1996 Dodge Avenger. It dies (I think "stalls" is the correct term) a lot but not consistently. It doesn't matter how hot or cold it is, how long it's been running, rain or shine. Sometimes it runs just fine, sometimes I can barely get out of a parking lot because it keeps dying.
Usually it's when I slow down or am stopped. Sometimes the RPMs drop to about 200 (idles normally around 500-700) and sputters out if I don't give it some gas. Most of the time though, it just drops out with no sputtering. This happens when I'm driving too.
If I've slowed down to turn and I'm going slow enough, the car will stall and die. If I'm going fast enough, it will stall but may kick back on after a second. It stalls when I'm driving on the highway but it's very fast. It doesn't shut off, but all the lights come on for a split second and the whole car jumps.
I've been to the mechanic a few times. The last time, he spent seven hours fixing something with the exhaust ("flex" something, underneath, in the middle) and there was a wire that was rubbing on something and broke. Still having the same problem.
He said if what he did didn't fix it, it might be a throttle switch (or something like that), but other than that, everything else looked fine.
Could it be something electrical? The way it's so inconsistent, it makes me think it's electrical and not mechanical. I've looked up Dodge Avengers and a few others have had stalling problems but I couldn't find a fix that I could suggest to the mechanic.
