I just did some work to it and it doesn't run as it should. I went to take off for work monday morning a week ago and i got 3 feet when it died in my driveway. Lucky me it happened in my driveway. After i asked a few people what to do i took off the valve cover to look at the timing chain, because the distributor rotor was not turning, as i turned the motor over. It was fine but i notice the distributor gear and the cam gear that turns the distributor was toast. I went ahead to pull out the distributor to fix the problem and broke the housing (it didn't want to come out so i tried to pry it). Anyways i found a replacement distributor and cam gear at a junk yard out of a running 86 22r pick up. The spark plug wires where included with the distributor, i needed to replace mine anyways (they came apart when i took them out). The new plug wires are from 2006 so i think they are fine, but didn't check them (they came out of a running truck). I put every thing back together with a new valve cover gasket, spark plugs, cap, rotor, air filter, used distributor, used spark plug wires. The timing chain was never moved while i change the distributor cam gear and i had my neighbor who is a professional mechanic help me set the timing and put in the distributor on the #1 pin. After i got it all together it started right up with no knocking or pinging. But i noticed it ran differently. after about a minute or 2 the idle slowed down and the motor stopped. i tried a several more times and it fires right up, but also hesitates on the start up sometimes and no change. I tried to adjust the distributor, up and down and got better results, but it still idles up and down like it wants to die. I tightend up the throttle cable ( i looked loose). It blows out black and white smoke when i step on the gas. It ran fine before the distributor gear decided to crap out. It starts up fine and runs pretty good for about a minute then runs like crap. What can i do? What could it be?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
