Why does my 1999 Ford Taurus still overheat when the radiator is full and has...

...no leaks otherwise? So, when the car is idling (in park or in drive) it sometimes starts to make a humming sound and then the radiator meter starts to go up. It doesn't always do this, but it seems to do this with increasing frequency over the course of the last 3 or 4 months. A few times the car actually overheated, and the liquid boiled over from under the cap (there are no leaks in the radiator or hose though).

I took my car to a mechanic not long ago and they weren't able to figure out what was wrong at all because it didn't act up when they tested it. They were thinking that maybe it was a bad wiring problem, and that every now and then the fan might stop working (though they didn't see this happen)...

Do I need to replace some obscure switch or something, or what?
