why does my 1997 ford f150 a/c blow hot air when it's suppose to be cooling the

It may be low on freon,or the mechanism that switches the temp from hot to cold may not be working, leaving your system in the "hot" mode.
To test the ac unit, you should let someone experienced with them check it for freon or faulty components.
The temp selector should be easy enough to check, though. There should be a valve in line on the inlet side hose of your heater core.It will be either under the hood or under the dash, depending on your make and model. They are operated by either a mechanical cable or by vacuum.Find the valve. With the engine running(in case it's vacuum),note the position of the valve.Move the temp selector to the opposite setting and check the valve. If it is operating then it is not the problem.Good luck with it.

Assuming you have the temp knob set to cold, The most common problem is low (or no) freon. Start the truck, set the a/c to full blast, open the hood and look at the compressor. The clutch (the front of the compressor) should appear to be spinning. If not, (or if it's cycling every couple of seconds) you need freon.

More than likely you a/c refrigerant (R-134a) is low. Take it to a shop and get a a/c inspection performed. They will make sure the components are working and see if the system is leaking.
