Why does my 1996 Dodge Avenger slowly leak antifreeze out and overheat?

Okay, so every 3 days or so, I have to add antifreeze to keep my car from overheating. Sometimes, the gauge just floats up and back to the middle...Check the fluid, no antifreeze at all! Add the antifreeze and it is fine for a couple of more days....What does this sound like? Could this be the thermostat? Also, today...my husband was driving to work...he noticed it was overheating..so as he was pulling over to the gas station..There was a big POP and fluid went everywhere on the windshield. What does that sound like? PLEASE Help!

it sounds like a blown head gasket creating to much pressure in the cooling system or a stuck thermostat on it,you might wont to have compression check ran on it and a pressure check on the cooling system that will tell you if it has blown head gasket, anytime one builds up enough presser it will push anti freeze out through the coolant resovoir and also cause a hose to blow which may have been what happned to that one, good luck.
