why does my 1984 chevy s10 blazer shut off if the gas isnt applied?

i need to press the gas to get it started and wen i take my foot off it shuts off or wen i stop at red lights / stop signs it will stay on or sometimes shut off but wen it turns green i have to hit the gas hard and it makes pops out of the exhaust and tries to shut off it has a carburetor its a v6 2.8l 1984 chevy s10 blazer i also am starting to hear a knocking from the passenger side but wen i make right turns it doesnt knock at all whats going on can someone help me so i can get this fixed
