Why does it surprise a man that a woman loves to be outdoors to dig in the land?

A wonderful NC area man who is lovely said to me today, "You like getting your hands dirty, more women should enjoy doing what you do."

I took it as a compliment, but on the other hand I felt alone in my own little "Tomboy" world. I love the outdoors and climbing trees, boulders or whatever, but I also love wearing heels, being pampered and being very feminine.
 
Because for the past few hundred years (probably more) men have done the physical labor, and women have done more fritter less but still important tasks. But with the ever changing world, women have had to do more things that are traditionally seen as "men's" role's (get jobs, etc.).
