Why does GM just rebadge cars?

GM and Chrysler build cars on the premise that most American consumers are stupid !!

As their sales have gone down the toilet , while Japanese automobile sale have gone through the roof , GM and Chrysler have indeed found that American consumers are definitely NOT stupid !!

Unless both of these car manufacturers get CEO`s of Lee Iacocca`s caliber in to head up the companies , I don`t hold out any long term hope for them !
 
Why do they rebadge so many car models and not come up with their own distinctive designs? I mean, the Pontiac G3 is a rebadge of a rebadge it's awful.
