I have an outdoor dog due to parents rules and she isn't ignore at all. I know some outdoor dogs are ignored but not all people who have outdoor dogs are ignoring their dogs.
My dog is not chained when she in the backyard, she free to run in a secure backyard.
I am 22yrs old

In reality, the majority of dogs that are outside 100% of the time ARE ignored. Doesn't apply to working dogs (Farm, hunting, etc.), but usually when a "pet" gets put outside it's because it hasn't been properly trained or is being destructive, so instead of finding the dog a new home with someone that will train it and take care of it, it gets thrown out in the yard.

Most outdoor dogs are ignored like my neighbors dog they feed and water her at times but they dont let her run and they sure dont show her any attention

An ignored dog can be outside or inside. To those of you who keeps your dogs inside 24/7, do they ever get down time or the chance to sleep in the sun? I'm not even going touch the subject of apartment dogs (ugh)

As long as they (the dog) have food, water, adequate shelter for your climate and their coat and a good excercise routine that means you can spend time with them. It doesn't matter if they sleep indoorsor out! They are usually happy. I'm not saying always since some are just neurotic hangers on that get huge separation anxiety when left alone.

I know of many outdoor dogs that are fine and I've seen some not so fine.

I have also seen many indoor dogs with constant companionship wich I would call neglected and/ or abused.

If you have been patted so much your hair has worn away it cannot be comfortable.

If you have been fed so much icecream and steak (cut to convienient bite sized pieces and fed one by one) until you are three times the healthy breed weight and most of your teeth has to be removed since they have almost rotted away and got infected...not good.

If your dog is that misbehaved that you cannot stop it jumping on people shame on you.

Animal ownership is a very thorny field, not everyone agrees with how to treat them.

My advice is keep the water bowl full enough so that busybodies can see it from the fence, if you have to post a notice detailing his diet (had to do that once some wonderful person nearly killed my puppy feeding it pastries, poor puppy and poor vet midnight callouts)

If you worried about how cold hes getting get one of those nifty dog bankets (like a horse rug) if you are worried bout heat set up a sprinkler or ice block.

Some dogs just don't fit inside, have you even had to clean up the shed hair of a St Bernard? stepped around a Irish Wolfhound, or tried to get needle likewhite hair out of black sweaters?

My dog is an outdoor dog (65cm high really long with an extra long tail and masses of hair shedding daily, to top it off hes white! and my house is fully carpeted!) Absolutely NO WAY am I cleaning up after that and two kids... He is perfectly happy with free play and daily excercise. He retreats to a fully enclosed pen for a rest if the children tire him too much or I think he needs a rest.

The indoor dog stories, they are real I have seen them and some of them belong to friends, yes I have spoken to them but in their individual cases, each thinks they are doing absolutely fine.

With you and your dog. Heres a tip my grandmama gave me. You will never please everyone. Don't burn yourself out trying. If he and you are comfortable and legal thats fine.

Hope this helps

I think at its base its sociological thing. To a human being put outside in the cold and ostracised from the group is very dangerous to an individual. I believe that is why its hard for people to separate themselves from their dogs and realise that good for humans is not always good for dogs. Comes to mind that what humans do to themselves isn't always good either eg, smoking (long term deadly), drinking(its a poision), obesity(heart and cholesterol) etc

If you have a dog for companion purposes, keeping her outside defeats the purpose.

Add:
Many working dogs spend a good part of their lives outside. However, that is because they have a job, i.e. guarding, livestock protection, etc. A dog who is there as a companion (especially dogs who thrive on human companionship like Labs and Golden Retrievers) is not doing her job as a companion if she is not with the family for a good bulk of her life. I don't think you're neglecting your dog in an abusive manner, but I also don't think the dog's psychological needs are being met.

Add #2:
You say your dog is outside because of your parents' rules. If your parents didn't have this rule, would you let your dog live inside? If so, why?

If you have a reason why you would let your dog live inside that conflicts with your parents' rule, then you must not think keeping your dog outside is the best thing to do.

Because some people think the only acceptable way to keep a dog is indoors. I wonder what they think about farm dogs that have jobs to do or hearding dogs. Oh yes and breeders who keep thier dogs in kennels outside.

It is not wrong as long as the right care is taken to ensure health and saftey and to meet the needs of the dog

My dogs are outdoors cause my parents wont let them in! But they let me bring them in during storms and last night our neighbors house got on fire and it was smoky so my dad let me bring them in =]

but my dogs are NOT ignored im an outdoor person and the people in my family are to! they always give the dogs a pat on the head when they walk by! I play with them alot cause dogs are my #1 animal!!! i run with them and i play with them!
but yes some outdoor dogs are ignored...like when we go somewhere i always see dogs in those small cages! and sometimes standing on there doghouses...

but my dogs dont get ignored they even get treats from the mailman =]

ADD...they have an underground pet fence and they run on about 1 1/2 acres =]

I think alot of people think of all outside dogs being chained up and never ever let off the chain, this is sometimes the case (more so in America i believe)
I have owned 3 lurchers and terriers, all have slept in a big/warm kennel at night, during the day they were very much part of the family, they just went out at night and if we went out during the day.

Most, if not all, (I'm trying to think of an exception and coming up blank) dogs kept strictly outdoors are pretty much ignored. I don't count refilling their food and water dish as quality time.

Perhaps you are the exception to the rule, who am I to say?

What do you care if stupid people dont know the difference.

Its like people who are racist, you shouldnt care what they think its just stupidity.

Your point is made, you have an outdoor dog that is not ignored. But then then again you are 22, living at home and obeying your parents rules.
