An ignored dog can be outside or inside. To those of you who keeps your dogs inside 24/7, do they ever get down time or the chance to sleep in the sun? I'm not even going touch the subject of apartment dogs (ugh)
As long as they (the dog) have food, water, adequate shelter for your climate and their coat and a good excercise routine that means you can spend time with them. It doesn't matter if they sleep indoorsor out! They are usually happy. I'm not saying always since some are just neurotic hangers on that get huge separation anxiety when left alone.
I know of many outdoor dogs that are fine and I've seen some not so fine.
I have also seen many indoor dogs with constant companionship wich I would call neglected and/ or abused.
If you have been patted so much your hair has worn away it cannot be comfortable.
If you have been fed so much icecream and steak (cut to convienient bite sized pieces and fed one by one) until you are three times the healthy breed weight and most of your teeth has to be removed since they have almost rotted away and got infected...not good.
If your dog is that misbehaved that you cannot stop it jumping on people shame on you.
Animal ownership is a very thorny field, not everyone agrees with how to treat them.
My advice is keep the water bowl full enough so that busybodies can see it from the fence, if you have to post a notice detailing his diet (had to do that once some wonderful person nearly killed my puppy feeding it pastries, poor puppy and poor vet midnight callouts)
If you worried about how cold hes getting get one of those nifty dog bankets (like a horse rug) if you are worried bout heat set up a sprinkler or ice block.
Some dogs just don't fit inside, have you even had to clean up the shed hair of a St Bernard? stepped around a Irish Wolfhound, or tried to get needle likewhite hair out of black sweaters?
My dog is an outdoor dog (65cm high really long with an extra long tail and masses of hair shedding daily, to top it off hes white! and my house is fully carpeted!) Absolutely NO WAY am I cleaning up after that and two kids... He is perfectly happy with free play and daily excercise. He retreats to a fully enclosed pen for a rest if the children tire him too much or I think he needs a rest.
The indoor dog stories, they are real I have seen them and some of them belong to friends, yes I have spoken to them but in their individual cases, each thinks they are doing absolutely fine.
With you and your dog. Heres a tip my grandmama gave me. You will never please everyone. Don't burn yourself out trying. If he and you are comfortable and legal thats fine.
Hope this helps
I think at its base its sociological thing. To a human being put outside in the cold and ostracised from the group is very dangerous to an individual. I believe that is why its hard for people to separate themselves from their dogs and realise that good for humans is not always good for dogs. Comes to mind that what humans do to themselves isn't always good either eg, smoking (long term deadly), drinking(its a poision), obesity(heart and cholesterol) etc
