Why does every lawyer try to torture the other spouse?

My lawyer says that I had to move to my mother's which is out of state. Enroll the kids in school immediately. To refuse him the right to see them. And Not let the kids out of my sight. I want a divorce but I am trying my best not to hurt my husband. Especially when it comes to the kids. How can I make this easier? I feel horrible.
The husband has a bit of a temper and has threatened me if I take the kids. It is also not safe for me to live there right now.

I'm not a lawyer, but if you move your child to another state and refuse to let him see them, you may be in serious trouble.

Even when a divorce is pending, a court can decide issues of custody and visitation rights.

Re lawyers: Lawyers bill by the hour. The bigger the fight and the longer it takes to resolve matters, the more the lawyer can bill. If you live in Maine and your mother lives in California, it's going to cost your husband a fortune to visit the children -- and they are his children, too. A judge might decide that your actions are designed to be punitive, and you probably won't like what he does.
