Why does a newer car equal less pollution?

cars don't make pollution, what makes pollution is junking them and getting new ones, no one is going to make a substantial profit pulling them apart and selling the parts to be recycled, so their left in junk yards

Newer cars are generally more efficient than older cars (and therefore tend to get better gas mileage), and have more efficient exhaust systems (which result in fewer harmful emissions).

Of course, it depends highly on the car. I have a 2000 Honda Insight (hybrid), so even though it's a 9-year-old vehicle, there isn't currently a car on the market I could have bought and earned a credit under the Cash for Clunkers program.
