Why do you think my 97 jeep wrangler check engine light is on?

ive replaced the 02 sensor about 2.5 years ago. the engine back fires when you take your foot off the pedal at higher speeds +40mph. its runs loud. and i can smell the exhaust when driving it. someone told me i need the exhaust manifold replaced and that it would cost around $700. another person told me its an issue on the engine it self, that its leaking out right on the engine. any ideas? thanks
 
Is the manifold cracked or has the gasket failed? if the exhaust manifold is cracked then it needs to be replaced. You can get a shop manual and order the part to do it yourself. It will save you a lot of money. Be careful with the bolts. They tend to freeze and break off.
