why do you care about the environment?

when observing the 2 dynamic systems of human society and earth's ecosystems, is the point of protecting the environment to protect humanity?

if so, should change in technology that mitigate these environmental externalities mean that the environment will no longer be necessary for the continued survival of our species and therefore will be worthless to protect?
for example:

one impact of global climate change is rising ocean levels. if the human race were to develop technology that allows us to live on the ocean indefinitely and lose dependency on land, are there any other reasons why land should be protected?

That is a si-fi question. There are many good reasons why something should remain under protection but those reasons have been shelved because of the farming for ideas, as i said. The question is si-fi.

sorry, but mother earth has given food, water, and air to all life. I'm not worried to much about humans, since their greed has caused the problems we are facing today. I do care about the animals, and plants and trees, that are being destroyed, because of humans ignorance.
