Why do weeds do SO well and garden crops do so lousy?

This summer has been uncommonly dry and hot here in NE Ohio. Many plants seem to have gone dormant, waiting for the rains to come again. But not the weeds. They have never stopped, not even when the soil is so dry, it is almost dust. How can they keep growing in the hot and dry when the "tame" plants give up? Maybe plant scientists need to investigate how to make a tomato more resistant or maybe more aggressive so that it might outrun the weeds for a change. Or maybe not. A non-stop Big Boy sandwich tomato? Hey! Why not? At least you can eat the tomatoes, unlike that horrible ragweed and orchard grass!
