Why do we see altruism even in animals, birds and fish?

The cat who walked 50 km in search of its master
The parrot who stayed near the bed of its owner an old lady who was dead for a week in her home
The dolphin who made friends with a little boy

How did these animals learn kindness without knowing who a God is or with no religion at all?

Love your questions.
There is a new book out on altruism. Heard about it on NPR radio. Sorry I can't give more information.
Altruism seems to be common in most mammals. There was a suggestion that even some reptiles displayed altruism. I'm skeptical about this and would like more data.
