In spring 2009, the UK Met Office predicted a hot barbeque summer. Three months down the line, they were forced to revise their forecast. We have had a wet July and August is going to be unsettled. With classic British cool we laugh at such things as we reach for the umbrella.
But why do we laugh at the obvious fallacies of long term weather predictions but buy the climate change argument wholesale?
And before you mention it, yes I do know the difference between climate and weather. I am more interested in what lies behind the psychological need to believe in millenarian predictions (such as climate change) while keeping a sense of perspective on many other issues.
