Why do we have to memorize it for a test?

Why do we need to know what other people think about a specific topic? Ex: why do we have to read other people's discoveries or views? Why is it important to have other people to tell us how to understand and memorize/study something from their points of view?
 
To understand how their discoveries worked and what errors occured and how to determine your own views
