Why do we call them movies?

I just love the people here we get such interesting postings.

about filums being Irish in origin since my real name is Riley and I came from Liverpool maybe I should pronounce it that way.

keep up the good work

it's all to do with the Americanisation of England and the UK.

They call them movies over in the US so we have to do.

It's the same with film posters and trailers too. It used to be that they would make a seperate one for the UK that said it was released on Date / Month.

As the US do Month then Day we have to have all our film posters in that format too.

It's cross culterisation (hey, I just made up a word!). The Yanks are taking on just as many of our colloquialisms as we do theirs, thanks mainly to the inetenet I would say.

No it's NOT pretentious.
It's ENGLISH (or British) to say "Films" or "Cinema".

Saying "Movie" and "Movie Theatre" (or even "theatER"!) is a bit pretentious IMO. It's trying to emulate the Americans and sound "cool".

This forum SHOULD be called "Films" or "Cinema" not "Movies".

English and has always been a Living language so it will always change over time.

Its a far richer language than most because it draws on the east and the west.

We all know worRAB of German French Latin and Greek origins
But others have Arabian Persian Turkish and Indian origins.

Well now modern communication and the internet is speeding up the whole process.
With spell checkers using American spellings and much being transcribed directly from web pages its inevitable.

I probably won't miss silent letters and the odd rules like I before E except after C, Colour or Color I don't mind too much.

It will all take a few hundred years anyway and I may not be here then unless I get myself turned into a Cyborg "just in time for terminator 6"
