Why do Verizon and AT&T Advertise so much?

Did anyone notice the amount of advertising that these two companies have conducted lately on TV? And, isn't ironic how their map of coverage includes almost the entire US while the other covers very little? How is that possible, then, that AT&T covers the whole US during their commercial, and yet, when a Verizon commercial is on they have the great coverage and AT&T has none? Does coverage just change that quickly that it changes during commercial breaks?

Also, why do both spend so much on advertising when they could both make greater profits if neither advertised?

Verizon shows a map and AT&T shows a map - they both want your business. At&t claims that you can use your landline telephone and be online at the same time. Verizon doesn't want people to use their phones at the same time they're online. These folks have money to burn - their advertising budgets are vast, and its because people want to talk on the phone all day long.
