Why do they gauges in my Jeep Wrangler go out?

I have a Jeep Wrangler and the gauges have been acting funny for a few months now. The gauges will randomly go off and then on (sometimes minutes, hours or days later). Very ANNOYING! Can't tell how much gas I have, how fast I'm going. Anyone have any idea what this could be? I took it to my mechanic, but he said they do not do electrical work. Is this something I could repair myself?
Wow that is just like mine. If it hit a pot hole or a set or railroad tracks they will immediatly go back on!
 
Sounds like you have a short in the dash. The only place I found to work on mine when it was doing that was a actual jeep dealership. If it is the same problem (which it sounds like) it cost me about $115 to have it repaired. It is very annoying mine would go out when I hit a bump then back on when I would hit another one at the right speed or, sometimes I could cut the windshield wipers on and they would work again. Hope this helps..
