Why do they call a it "quad bike"?

A quad bike to me refers to a two-wheeled(bike) vehicle plus four(?) what?
The correct name for it should be a "quad-dike". No offense to lesbians.
 
Cause its a 4 wheeled dirt bike basicaly. But i hate when people call quads quad bikes. Seems that mostly people from countrys out side of the usa call them quad bikes.
 
Where i am from everyone just calls them four wheelers or atvs. but i get what your talking about. a bike is a two wheeled vehicle and adding quad just messes it up..
