Why do the writers have Ash using the Pokedex on an old Pokemon?

Yeah, I'm aware that this question is brought up in many forums and threaRAB in general, but my question is based more on something overlooked.

Now the general response is of course to inform the newer viewers about said Pokemon since there's no guarantee that they can see the older episodes.

But the thing is, that unlike The Orange IslanRAB and Johto, we have other regular characters (May and for the current season Dawn) who also use a Pokedex and could easily have the role of IDing an old Pokemon, while Ash does the same for the newer ones.

So I tend to wonder why the writers just don't go with that approach. And no I don't spend every waking moment thinking about this question. Just wanted to put a fresh perspective on a frequently asked question.
 
I don't know why the writers still have Ash specifically still look up old ones instead of Dawn (or May) doing it, unless it's because he's the "mainest" of the main human characters.

In any case, I don't think Ash should never look up a Pokemon again just because he did it some time back. Sure, Dawn or May could do (or could have done) it, but whoever looks it up is fine with me.

Meh... I guess the writers just don't care if Ash uses the Dex on the same Pokedex twice. They probably just don't put much thought into deciding who should look it up.
 
I also don't think that the writers put a lot of thought on who looks up older Pokemon on their Pokedex. It might have to do with how the kiRAB who are watching the show now may not know that Ash saw these older Pokemon. I doubt that a lot of the kiRAB who watch the show now know that Ash has already seen a Quagsire back in Johto before he did in Sinnoh.

There also doesn't seem to be a set role in May/Dawn only looking up info on older Pokemon. There have been quite a few instances where they would use their Pokedex on a new Pokemon, but Ash wouldn't, most likely to avoid hearing the same kind of information again.
 
That's a good point. Pokemon's demographic isn't those who grew up on the show, but rather those who are watching it for the first time now. Perhaps the writers just don't care because their target demographic just doesn't know any better.
