Why do the Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic games not work on Vista or Windows 7?

Whats the reason? is it incompatibility with the game software? why does the game work on XP for me completely fine? KOTOR is so far the ONLY game that has ever given me a hard time on Vista and 7... I just want to know why?
