Why do the religious treat free will as some sort of holy magical edict?

You can use your free will to choose exactly what knew you would choose. hardly free will.
Free will is an illusion. Outside the occasional mental disorder people will choose whatever choice will ensure their survival. You will not choose anything which leads to your death. Your choices lead to families, children , marriage or many women .. either way it propagates the species.
There is an evolutionary explanation for "free will."
What I'm getting at, is that free will is not really free will.
Homosexuality appears naturally throughout the animal kingdom. You'll have to talk to a biologist to learn of the chemical reactions or developmental processes which lead to it.
as far as drug addiction, that has more to do with the side affects of the drug than the people taking them.
Most kids aren't fully aware of what addiction truly is. If they did i'm sure they would spare themselves the misery. However at the beginning, when they first begin taking the drugs, it is for the purpose of fitting in, and in the case with most teens, getting the attention of girls also plays a part.
Getting girls, gaining more notoriety/ popularity, becoming alpha male or the most sought after female all has an evolutionary explanation.
As adults people begin drinking or doing drugs to escape from some mental issue. depression, sadness etc. The alcohol and drugs offer a temporary relief from those mental problems, unfortunately the addictive nature of these things ends up causing more harm in the long run. No one starts doing drugs or drinking because they want to get addicted and kill themselves or destroy their lives.
