Why do teens limit themselves to YA books?

This is something I've noticed, especially on Books & Authors. Teens specifically ask for "teen" book recommendations, which I assume would be the YA (young adult) category. While there is nothing wrong with YA, I just don't understand why people limit themselves to YA novels and do not also want to read more adult works.

I recognize that the line between YA and Adult can be blurry and that there is an obvious answer (teens like to read about teens). But does anyone have thoughts on why teens sometimes limit themselves to YA?

I'm a teenager, and I actually don't limit myself to YA books. I'll read practically any age group and genre.

That said, most teenagers probably limit themselves to YA simply because it's what they know. Their friends recommend YA books, they will read those, and then they will search for more.

I wonder if it has to do with reading levels, as well. Many teenagers aren't big on reading, but they will do so when the books are easy and they can relate to them; in short, when the books are YA.

Technically that's not true; not all teens limit themselves to YA books. I'm a teen and personally, I prefer more adult themed books like murder mysteries and stuff. I suppose it's because they're not ready to make the transition to 'adult' yet but they don't want anything that's too babyish. It also helps that when a teen reads a teen book, the character's are often teenagers and face 'teenage' things such as puberty and it's perhaps a comfort to them that they're not the only ones etc. Personal views anyway.

I agree, I am a teen myself and I read both. I enjoy books from both but I have found that my friends and I respond that it will most likely allow them to connect to the book more. Also some teens are just not capable to understand the concepts of the more developed and mature adult books. They don't have the brain capacity to understand sometimes. Lots of teens like to make things easy. I believe that once we mature we will be able to understand the books more and therefore enjoy them like I do. Another reason is that teens aren't very brave, what I'm trying to say it that we like to do what we are supposed and not go beyond the boundaries. I hope this helps you understand us teens and our immature ways...
Best answer please!

A lot of teens look for books which are easy to read and adult books sometime have tougher vocabulary and plot lines. I personally completely skipped the YA section and went from childrens to adults because I got bored with the teen angst books quickly.

Because they (that is, the ones who ask those sorts of questions) perceive that the only books they can enjoy are those specifically targeted to them, which is, of course, false, as I can attest to having read quite a few more mature novels while I was in high school.

That, at least, is my personal theory on the matter.

A lot of the time, teens are used to writers of that level and don't really 'know' how to move up. Teens who still do read know who they and they kind of stories they like, but they don't look around for higher level books with the same vibe.

because, most teens want books about teenagers, and most adult books are boring to teens, there looking for something they know will grab there attention.
And right now, teen books are what's in I guess. Even some adults are reading YA books. There just really interesting.

hope I helped :D
