Why do supporters of torture feel that we can overlook both US and international laws?

Right now, they are in a spin-tizzy trying to cover their butts, but their arguments that "saving US lives through torture"--has somehow given them some kind of special latitude or immunity from being prosecuted from the fullest extent of the law. (If the truth ever came to light.)

So how does torture give the US the upper hand in ethics and morality? How does it make us look like the 'better man' when it comes down to things like law and justice?

Should we just jettison our morale system so that we can punish those whom hurt us on 9/11--by getting in our own special 'spanking sessions' in the meantime?

Where will the line be drawn? Because right now, every nation has watched us fall from grace during the Bush years, and those rogue nations we don't like are just thinking to themselves, "Welcome to the club! Thanks for joining us!"

And even though Obama's President, the torture support groups are crying foul and claiming that by not torturing our enemies, we have been left more weaker than before.

It doesn't make much sense--thinking that torture is a 'cure-all' for all our problems--or how we deal with our enemies.

All it does is degrade our nation's standing and image and leaves us in a bigger hole than before we got started on this slippery slope.

So why can't these torture "types" see that? What do they have to be the most afraid of?

Did you lose family members on 9/11? I would love to torture the a**holes that blew up our country! If you ask me, they didn't torture them enough.

torture...wow...getting slapped in the face..torture..then my mom tortured me....so did my dad actually...come to think of it..i slapped a couple of people too...i guess i'm guilty, eh?

making someone get nekkid? lord, every doctor and nurse in this country is guilty then i suppose... as well as most husbands..and many wives...

as for waterboarding...how many times did my brothers dunk me when we were swimming? maybe i can have them prosecuted as well...and that tickling? oh my! i think they should get 20 years for that! but wait, i think i may have done the same thing to my little brother..better hold off on that!

loud music? sleep deprevation? someone call the cops! and prosecute my neighbor! between his music, car alarm and barking dogs i haven't slept in weeks!

so how come there wasn't an outcry about chopping off heads? or arms? dragging bodies through the street and hanging them from the town bridge? how come the NYT's didn't run those pics hundreds of times?

remember 9/11? remember the outcry on "why didn't we know?" remember that? the same people will be crying again the next time it happens. and it will happen again. and where will our CIA be? they will be doing just as they were told to do.

and the blame will rest firmly on the backs of the democratic congress, those shouting for "heads" of the lawyers who wrote the opinions that allowed water boarding and most of all it will rest directly on the back of the president who allowed it to happen again...

Odd I have never seen a law against torture here in the states...and International "law" is not law..it is guideliens...but dont let REALITY interfere with yourt rant

Becuz da louzy bastids blew up the WTC & Pentagon, beheaded innocents on live webcasts & have their women & children used as suicide bombers. What other reasons do you need? A knife at your throat? Or your daughter's?

Depends on your definition of "torture" -- some people are more sensitive than others.

1
a: anguish of body or mind : agony
b: something that causes agony or pain

2: the infliction of intense pain (as from burning, crushing, or wounding) to punish, coerce, or afford sadistic pleasure

3: distortion or overrefinement of a meaning or an argument : straining

I'd contend terrorists torture us...or at least the 3000+ who went down in the WTC, those aboard the planes and those who love their fellow Americans.

Consequently, the memos state the tactics worked and diffused an attack in LA, Ca.

Oh please, know the specifics before you lable the USA as this horrible torturous nation.

"According to the memos, water-boarding was used on just three people and produced good intel. A doctor was standing by during the process, which lasted less than 40 seconds. Sleep deprivation, cold rooms, and the threat of a caterpillar were also used on captured terrorists — about 30 of them — the CIA questioned.
Writing in The Wall Street Journal Friday, former CIA Chief Michael Hayden and former Attorney General Michael Mukasey say:
"The (harsh) techniques themselves were used selectively against only a small number of hard-core prisoners who successfully resisted other forms of interrogation, and then only with the explicit authorization of the director of the CIA ... fully half of the government's knowledge about the structure and activities of Al Qaeda came from those interrogations." "

oh because sleep deprivation and cold rooms are soooooooo horrible. yeah right. We gained HALF of all information we know about al qaeda from these interrogations.

and musicman is right, we prevented an attack at LAX airport from these interrogations.

There is no morality if you are dead. Torture saves lives & if it saves one American life, even that of a pacifist, it is worth it. Ask yourself if torture could save the life of the one you love, would it be okay?
