Why do spiders sit in the middle of their webs..!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?

Isn;t that a bit stupid. Won't the flies see them and then NOT fly near them. I just noticed this spider who has spun A HUGE web across the outside of my kitchen window (i am NOT going near that thing to demolish). And the freaky spider is just sitting patiently in the middle. Why? And what do they think about.


..Sometimes the spider is there and sometimes it isn't.
