I read another question about a man who's girlfriend threatened him with a knife and he hit her. A large proportion of the answers mostly the female ones but some of the mens' thought it was wrong for the man to defend himself. Almost half the answers also thought this was illegal.
self defense is legal, regardless of gender. Hitting someone in self defense isn't domestic abuse. Why is there a belief that only men can commit acts of violence and that it is completely wrong for a man to hit a woman even when in danger?
