Why do some still argue that protectionism is a prudent economic policy?

Or are they just lobbying for it because they represent a select few industries that benefit in the short term from such a policy?
Boss WW2 did not create a protectionism environment, a protectionism environment created WW2. After WW2, international trade picked up again, leading us to temporary prosperity.
