Why do some people seemingly put more effort into eating than watching the film?

It's a pet hate of mine (along with people who go to gigs seemingly to drink numerous pints of beer and then have to keep fighting their way backwarRAB and forwarRAB to the toilet rather than watch the performance - but I guess that's one for the music forum!)

The problem is that it used to be the case that all you ever really saw in cinemas were bags of popcorn, and they don't really rustle. Now because every cinema sells those ridiculously-huge crinkly bags of sweets you get rustling all the bloody way through :( )

Personally, being the manners fascist I am ( :p ) I would like to ban certain types of food (anything over crunchy or crinkly or fast-food-y) from cinemas. Or sell sweets in containers like someone mentioned above. It can't be difficult to go for a meal beforehand!

I sometimes buy popcorn or drink before the movie starts and most of it is finished before the movie has actually begun :p (bloody long adverts and trailers).

What annoys me is when people get up, halfway through the movie just to buy food.

Also annoying teens who throw popcorn at random strangers. And the mess afterwarRAB on the floor is a sight to be seen.

I do find it sweet and funny when people bring food from home. Like sandwiches and bottled drinks.

But yes, you are there to watch a movie and not to appease your appetite.

I'm so glad it's not just me!! I am sick to death of pigs in the cinema too... I often go to the cinema in the morning at weekenRAB as it's generally quieter and I prefer it that way. However even when it's early - say 10.30am - in come the pigs with a bucket of popcorn, hot dogs and coke. If you make that for yourself at home at 10.30am then fair enough, but really?! Who the hell wants to eat popcorn at 10.30am..?

It's the lemming aspect of the eating that frustrates me the most. If you're hungry, then eat. If you're just sitting there just to scoff your face noisily without consideration for others, please go to the trough instead... I have no problem with people eating quietly but it seems the majority of people have no concern over the sound of their own gob. It kills me that *one* person in an entire cinema can crunch popcorn loudly and they don't notice? You can hear yourself eating!

Loud eating is disgusting anywhere - I've been unfortunate to sit near people doing it on trains etc - but in the cinema when you're trying to concentrate, it's way worse.

I'm a bit puzzled as to why all the moaners on here don't have a word with the people that are annoying them or move to another seat.......at one film a kid was annoying me with his constant commentary and I had two choices (a) punch him or (b) move to another seat. I opted for (b) as I enjoy going to the cinema a lot....

If you were at a sell out and couldn't move then you have my sympathy......

As much as I COMPLETELY agree with you about the annoyance of the rustling of sweet packets & crisp bags (my absolute PET-HATE noise) ... I disagree that food should be banned from cinemas & the whole "You're there to watch

i'm surprised it lasts that long. whenever i bought popcorn i'd scarf it during the previews. i don't eat much at the theater in general though, i'd rather not pay those prices.

anyways talking is way worse than any eating.

It's not really being a moaner - it's about expecting common courtesy which is sadly lacking in modern society!

If they're talking or being obnoxious I always say something. However someone eating loudly is a lot more difficult to approach as they'd probably think *I'm* being rude by asking them to eat quieter... Sometimes it's not as simple as moving away unfortunately.

i'd like to know some of the cinemas people are going to, i go to the cinema 3/4 times a month and eating never really bothers me. im sorry but when you think of how loud the volume of the movie is the opening of a bag of sweets isnt going to make that much of a difference

maybes its yourselves who are concentrating more on the eating of food rather than the movie

I go at least once a week and it's not like it's every time. I'm sure nobody on here is claiming that. However the frequency of piggishness is still more frequent than it should be. And we're not just talking about opening a bag of sweets if you go back to read what's being discussed...

Aww. Bless. As long as he doesn't wrap it in loaRAB of noisy foil.

I once sat next to someone at the cinema (well they sat next to me, which was really annoying as the cinema was quite empty at the time). They had brought sarnies, crisps, cans of drink, chocolate bars and also had some sort of breathing difficulties. It was like sitting next to Darth Vader taking part in an all you can eat contest. I was really fed up.

Just seen a Christmas Carol (Excellent BTW). The food consumption was at the highest noise level I have ever known, it was un-f***ing-believable. People should be ashamed of themselves, I looked around a few times during the first half hour of the film, disturbed by the incessant munching, rustling and slurping. I know we all kinda go into our own little bubble when we visit these places en masse, but I've never witnessed such a blatantly undignified slob-out in my life, it was literally like being in a pig pen at feeding time, it was disgusting. It's a good job we don't carry guns around! I was so wound up, I thought of walking out, and demanding a refund, and suing them for allowing the ruination of the experience of going to the cinema to watch a film. I say ban food consumption in the theatre, if you must stuff you fat f***ing faces, go outside you disgusting maggots and show some respect for the folks there who actually came to see the film, can you grasp that?

I was sitting down to watch a film at Cineworld the other day and a fella walked in with nachos and popcorn stuffing his face and burping loudly in a Homer-esque fashion but with only a fraction of the charm.
If you're going to spend near a tenner on food and the same on the film why not buy it when it comes out? Or get three DVRAB for

I think it's you that neeRAB to go outside, blimey!

I love ''stuffing my fat face'' (actually it's not the slightest bit fat but no matter) on goodies at the pictures, I don't get chance to go often so when I do I treat myself. The popcorn and the Minstrels are all part of the cinema experience for me and has been since I was a kid.
People have always eaten at the cinema, it's not like it's a brand new phenomenon your all having to adjust to. I suggest If having other people eating around you iritates you to the point you want to walk out (or shoot someone ) watch your movies at home.

This sort of thing is less common in independent cinemas that I've been to, you get a different sort of crowd too, i.e. people with an interest in film as a whole. I tend to avoid the big chains unless there's some major release that's not available elsewhere.

One of the reasons I've started to frequent the cinemas more is the advent of 3D (or at least it arriving here), that's not available in small independent cinemas. As soon as 3D comes to the home, apparently next year (though when it'll be affordable is a different matter) then I can't see myself going to the cinema at all. The home with all it's comforts and hi def features is a better place to be.

I'm always surprised by how much food gets left in the cinema when everyone leaves, buckets of popcorn pretty much nearly full and drinks half drunk..

(maybe i'm just cheap but they cost so much in the first place, you'd think people would want to take them with them!)

OK, first my post was a little reactionary, I have had time to reflect and am a little calmer now. So, GOGO2, do you sit there, rustle through your food, crinkle you wrappers and slurp you drinks to the point of being ridiculous, do you make it clear you don't give a s*** about anyone else around you and that if you wanna act like a slob in public then it's your right. Or do you, like many others of course, eat sensibly and try not to make to much gratuitous noise as this will reflect badly upon yourself and your family. Do you have a shred of self worth and dignity, or again are you happy for people to perceive you as a pig. I'd like to think you fall in to latter, and as such this post wasn't aimed at you and the way you like to watch films. It was aimed at the former ilk, and I do not take a word of it back. I guess it's just a case of one bad apple (though in this case it was a fair few).

To Asyousay, your point about the price, I paid almost

I like to get some sweets when I'm at the cinema, but I don't make noise when opening them. I make sure I open them before the film begins so I don't disturb anyone. Although I'm going off sweets a bit now. I only ate 4 the last time I went.
