why do some people put a cellphone on their ear when they arent even calling anyone.?

i see it sometimes. when a person is walking that person puts the cellphone on his/her ear. then after a while he/she pockets the fn. sometimes sitting wd frnds, the same is done. i observe they dont dial on it or if they are supposedly being called why dnt they talk? they just put the cellfn on their ears, look arnd and put it down.
