Why do some people look down on non contact sports?

I'm considered a jock at my school i start on both my Schools state ranked football team and lacrosse team. I've wanted to take up swimming and am thinking about doing it. But it is looked down on at my school like soccer, diving, etc.
My friends would most likely mess with me about it because, it's far off from what sports i do. A friend of mine who plays lacrosse, took up soccer and was made fun of. I was just wondering why this is

They probably don't think it's manly. But soccer? That's a BIG deal at my school. But that's probably because it's mostly Hispanic.

Most likely because it's assumed non contact sports are not really "manly" enough or anyone playing a non contact sport is not considered "manly" enough. Also could be because a little violence is more entertaining to watch or play. Either way, you shouldn't base your decision on what your friends might think. If you think you'll enjoy it, give it a try. Life's too short to be saying no to something simply because people may give you a hard time about it.
