Why do some people argue against free will on the grounds of hell?

Meaning, they say that free will doesn't exist if the choice to accept God or not comes with the caveat that if you don't, you'll be eternally damned. These people argue that there is no free will if you have the gun of hell to your head.

But isn't it true that every choice has consequences, and without them, choices would be meaningless?

I don't believe in eternal damnation myself, but the "hell abolishes free will" argument doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
