Why do SOME (not all) atheists complain about Christians saying a Bible verse is

being taken out of context? If someone CONTINUES to take something out of context then OF COURSE I will keep on bringing this up as long as they keep on doing it.

If a Bible skeptic never took the Bible out of context then I would NEVER say they're taking the Bible out of context.

Here is an example. Look at how many people gave me a thumbs down.

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090622054459AAbY7dJ

The verses are out of context because they ignored surrounding verses.
Rick in the Santa Hat: Those children were really YOUNG adults. That verse is a mistranslation. They were a gang of thugs that were going to MURDER him. It was self defense.

So how do you explain the christian' s cherry picking and adjusting the Bible content to '¨just allegorical'¨or ''this has REALLY happen''...
You christians either accept the bible as whole, or you don't at all
It starts with you, not with us

You weren't wrong in yelling "out of context" but you are wrong in not providing an explanation. If you simply say "out of context" that would be the same as me answering this question with a "1245"
Provide back up or an explanation. If you can't or don't you will not be taken seriously.

It begs the question: WHO gets to decide which is the "proper" context; and by WHAT criteria do they make that determination?

Without a definitive, objective source (e.g.; a "Teacher's Edition" of the Bible), you're just making it up as you go...

Then, by all means tell us and explain what the proper context is. I'll check back in half an hour to see your response.

"Oh look, your god told you to kill people"

"IT'S TAKEN OUT OF CONTEXT! IT'S TAKEN OUT OF CONTEXT! I CAN'T HEAR YOUUUUU!!! LALALALALALA"

"Okay....how is it taken out of context?"

"I'M NOT GOING TO EXPLAIN! I'M NOT GOING TO EXPLAIN! I'M JUST GOING TO GIVE YOU A COP OUT AND SAY YOU NEED TO ACCEPT JESUS INTO YOUR HEART TO UNDERSTAND LALALALALALALA"

Edit: Im waittinggg...it's been half an hour.

You will ALWAYS say ANY verse which says something you don't like to be taken out of context or find some other way to weasel yourself out of it.

Example: your "defense" of your god sending bears to kill 42 young ones. Even if they were "young adults" (doesn't say that but whatever), and even if they were "going to kill him" (doesn't say that but whatever, and are you really saying that all 42 were murderers?), we would STILL expect a fair trial, not a group of murdering bears. Okay?

Again with the 2 Kings 2 23:24?

It's not a mistranslation. I checked. It says "children".
The fact that you repeat this lie shows blatant dishonesty.

OK then.

PUT IT BACK INTO CXONTEXT and THEN explain just why such action is STILL not detestable.

What frustrates many people (Not all atheists) concerning the "interpretation" of scripture is the absolute CONSTANT disregard of so many verses, while using other verses to condemn other people.

The "cherry picking" is abominable.

PLEASE PUT INTO context the following verses and THEN explain just why this is not someone telling us that it is OK to act immorally:

"Slaves, obey your earthly masters with deep respect and fear. Serve them sincerely as you would serve Christ." (Ephesians 6:5)

"Christians who are slaves should give their masters full respect so that the name of God and his teaching will not be shamed. If your master is a Christian, that is no excuse for being disrespectful. You should work all the harder because you are helping another believer by your efforts. Teach these truths, Timothy, and encourage everyone to obey them." (1 Timothy 6:1-2)

Just why is it that EVDERYTHING you do not like is a mistranslation or "taken out of context" but everything you want to keep is meant to be taken literally?

And you are also wrong. The Hebrew phrase here is CLEARLY LITTLE CHILDREN!

You said that the verse was taken out of context and it was.
Why people rely on a single verse and not the whole book is beyond me, and to offer it's meaning while excluding the entire contents of the story is just as absurd. Classic case of bending verse to suite their agenda. No offense to the non-believers, but if you are going to make accusations regarding verse or scripture YOU also must understand what you are reading and since disbelief is your strongest suite, how can you truly see what it is saying to you?

many use it as a phrase to claim why something is wrong and there's no reason - you may as well have parrots quoting shakespeare
there is no context given when many christians are using verses to attack others yet many then seek to refer to context when they are on the receiving end
this isn't aimed at you but this is my experience

i already explained this to you
because they are nto being taken out of context]they are being taken as they are written
if YOU beleive thee is anothe rmeaning to the words, fine, i dont midn that, its yoru right
but i know the actual meaning and the reasons behind what they say in that book

whats the point in askign things only to ingore the answers

if they are a true atheist (which there is no such thing) they would not know what the context is. they are blinded to Gods word.

just babbling

Here is your big chance put them in context

Ezekiel 9:5-7 NLT)

"Then I heard the LORD say to the other men, "Follow him through the city and kill everyone whose forehead is not marked. Show no mercy; have no pity! Kill them all – old and young, girls and women and little children. But do not touch anyone with the mark. Begin your task right here at the Temple." So they began by killing the seventy leaders. "Defile the [enemies'] temple the LORD commanded. "Fill its courtyards with the bodies of those you kill! Go!" So they went throughout the city and did as they were told."

(Deuteronomy 13:1419 NLT)

If you find it is true and can prove that such a detestable act has occurred among you, you must attack that town and completely destroy all its inhabitants, as well as all the livestock. Then you must pile all the plunder in the middle of the street and burn it. Put the entire town to the torch as a burnt offering to the LORD your God. That town must remain a ruin forever; it may never be rebuilt......

Deuteronomy 22:28
If a man meets a virgin who is not engaged, and seizes her and lies with her, and they are caught in the act, 29the man who lay with her shall give fifty shekels of silver to the young woman’s father, and she shall become his wife. Because he violated her, he shall not be permitted to divorce her as long as he lives.
