Why do some fish live for years, whereas others only manage to survive for a few months?

I'm talking about "basic" fish like goldfish. When i owned one it lasted for about 2 months and then died. But, a relative of mine has had her goldfish for 10 years. (And she doesn't always keep the fish tank in the best condition)

Why is this?
