Why do some cultures value boy babies over girl babies?

Why do some cultures value boys over girls and why do some cultures not believe in birth control?
 
Some cultures value girls, although they are much more rare.


Birth control is not used b/c to have many children is just part of the culture, and shows that you are keeping the people going. Also, they believe that some will die before age 5 (poverty) and that when they (the parents) are old the children will care for them.
 
Boys carry the family name. Girls may be perceived more-so as 'property'.

For any advancing growing group in society, - it pays to advocate the concept of "be fruitful and multiply". Any competing idea (birth control) serves only the interests of a selfish individual?
