why do some bicycle riders use the road and stop at traffic lights?

I don't get why they do this, when they can just use the pavement and get where there going faster plus make it easier for the real road uses who are stuck behind them
some pavement are split in half one side for people on foot and one for bikes
 
In most states/counties/cities it is illegal for bike riders to ride on sidewalks. And as for stopping at lites, they are expected to obey the law just like any other driver on the road.
 
Because the pavement is for pedestrians, bicycle users are supposed to ride on the road and the same rules apply to them as it does for the drivers (ie) stopping at red lights etc. It would be much more dangerous for preople to bike on the pavement.
