Why do societies so often see their own culture as the only correct one?

In present times, people in developed countries often will see democracy, free trade, and the modern lifestyle as the best choice as it is the lifestyle they are accustomed to. Alternative lifestyles, especially in underdeveloped countries, are often seen as inferior.

Which brings me to my point about religion. Is this same concept prevalent in most major religions? With Christianity and Islam for example, all other religions are seen as inferior and even punishable in the afterlife. With tolerance of other cultures and the ability to see from more than a singular perspective growing throughout the world, why is it that so often this same mentality is not extended to religion?
