Why do so many people whine about the BCS?

Why is it SO important that college football have a national champion? The teams only play 12-13 games, it's impossible for combinations to be set outside of conferences that truly test teams. A national basketball champion can realistically win half it's conference games then go on a tear during March Madness and surprise they're champions. Why do fans expect so much from football? Do you REALLY think the polls have the preseason Top 25 down cold? The best team in the country might just not be the ones that are on paper. (ask Michigan) If Michigan was 5th, how good was Appalachian State? Was that a fluke? If so, how good was the Oregon team that beat Michigan the very next week? There is no way to determine a national champion unless a playoff was set for a MINIMUM of 16 teams, and probably would need to be more. ESPN and it's ilk of BS idea-mongers simply need to STHU, focus on conference championships, then solid bowl match-ups, as the BCS is better than what was.
