Why do so many people park their cars in their gardens as opposed to on the street?

I've been looking on Google Streetview at residential areas in cities such as London and Coventry. As it turns out, many people have removed the walls of their often very small front gardens and concreted/cobbled over the space so that they can park their cars(s) on it. Is there a reason that they don't want their cars parked on the street. Is it a lack of parking space?
