I just don't understand the mindset behind it. For example, the base iMac starts at $1199. It only has 4GB DDR3, an Intel Core i3, 500GB 7200rpm HDD, and a weak 256MB ATI GPU. Any other brand would charge like $400-500 for that. And you could just buy OS X yourself and put it on that. You could buy those components, build the computer yourself, and just buy OS X and install it yourself for less than that. Heck, Apple charges $100 for their "Superdrive" which is just an 8x DVD-Rom drive. They cost like $20-30 if you buy any other DVD-rom. That's a blatant ripoff. They charge exponentially more for their HDDs than it costs to buy a WD Caviar, and they're expensive in their own right.
I just really don't understand the point. It seems like a giant waste of money to me.
