Why do so many military transport planes use turboprop engines as opposed to jet...

...engines? I know there are a fair few jet-engined transport aircraft out there but I'm speicifcally talking about the Airbus A400M. This is obviously a new, ongoing project and I was wondering why they would have chosen to use turboprop over jet engines in this day and age. Does it enable the aircraft to do certain tasks that a jet engine would be physically incapable of?
Thanks in advance

They tend to work better on shorter runways that may be found in combat areas.
Can take off and land in shorter runways.

good ? i was thinking that myself after watchinc a NCIS rerun
1 runways can b shorter
2 they already have them,,,cheaper than buying new ones is biggest thing

they dont need speed they need powa. and im guessing that props give power not speed. allso it may be cheeper to make or runn. but then again i have no diea waht im talking about

From what I remember from aircraft propulsion class, turboprop engines are more efficient at subsonic speeds and at low altitude. Noise, vibrations and size are a disadvantage but are not a problem under the operating conditions of military transports.
