Why do so few black people go into higher education?

Just finished my first year at uni. Why do so few black people decide to go to uni? I live in the UK. We have essentially free education - still why so few black people???

No racist comments
I study medicine in London - may be thats why?
 
Theirs different variations of of population density of black people through the UK, as their are white people in other countries, so you just may have been in an area with few black people. I'm pretty sure though that the proportion on white and black people in higher education is roughly the same as that of how many of each their are in the UK altogether.
Sincere apologies if any of this is taken in a racist way.
