Why do road bikes cost more than mountain bikes?

not necessarily, but most likely b/c of the expensive and super light parts....there is this mountain bike fork that costs 1000 plus USD, thats more than twice the whole price of my bike....= =

I can get you a Scott mountain bike that will run you $12,000 if you would like http://www.scottusa.com/gb_en/product/2410/16100/genius_limited and there are several others on the market that will cost as much or more than a comparable road bike too. They are ALL made of the same materials in every price range.

Mostly the materials used to build them the road bike for lightness, mountain for a stronger frame to handle the rougher off road conditions

A good mountain bike can cost more then a road bike. The low end road bikes are more expensive then low end mountain bikes because of the components used.

because of the light weight parts and more custom frame designs, the lower end road bikes cost significantly more than lower end mountain bikes. when you get to the midrange to high end bikes, they cost similar. my Specialized stumpjumper mtb was $400 more than my friends full carbon Specialized tarmac. it just depends how much you want to spend when you get to higher end bikes.
