Why do phones not allow music with normal, mono, non-A2DP headsets?

I've gone through 3 phones but only one bluetooth headset, the Samsung WEP410. All 3 phones had some type of music playing capability, but none of them let me play music through my headset. When I ask about it, the manufacturers say that I need A2DP to play music, but why? I've heard the argument from people that you don't "want" to listen to music on those headsets because the sound quality is horrible, but I listen mostly to podcasts and if I can just hear people talking, that's fine (and why do they feel they need to limit my ability based on their preference?).

I currently have a T-Mobile HTC G1 and even though it's a "smart" phone with Google's "open" Android platform, it won't let me play music (or any media audio) through my old cheapo headset, nor can I find any apps to force that functionality. My headset still sounds great for phone calls and I would imagine be just as good for podcasts (actually I know it sounds fine because I can pair it with my computer and listen to podcasts through there).

I'll probably end up giving in and buying an A2DP headset, I'm looking at the Plantronics Voyager 855, but if I'd still like a good reason for why the phone engineers can't make it work with older, non-A2DP headsets.
